I had a lot of fun at the half-marathon today. I finished the race smiling, which was my main objective. I knew I wouldn’t be fast because I wasn’t motivated to do serious training. Being on vacation the 8 weeks before the race will do that. But I can say I ran a race in Alaska and the metal and shirt are cool! I was a little surprised I finished in 2:09. I honestly expected well over 10 minute miles.
We boogied out of Anchorage after lunch. We were especially ready to leave behind the train that ran immediately behind the campground and blew its horn every 4 hours. Big surprise, we had no plan where we were going. Our only direction was south. A comparison of weather forecasts had us heading towards Homer. Randomly, we did a drive-through of the national forest campground Granite Creek. We both expected to travel quite a bit longer today, so the drive-through was really just a whim. We loved the campground so much, we stayed.
Our campsite is picture perfect. Trees, tall mountains with streams running down them, fireweed blooming, and a creek just on the other side of tall brush so we can hear it babbling. A short path leads to the creek. There are very few people in this small campground, so it’s quiet and private too. We spent a really nice afternoon outside just relaxing.
