Planes, Trains and Dog Sleds

Fun Day in Whitefish was great. We dropped off Iris at a doggie spa and day care yesterday and spent the day doing things she couldn’t do with us. The day started with a 7-mile run for me on a great loop trail along the waterfront. I’m still going to blame the elevation for being so winded. Mike was awesome and walked around the waterfront, taking pictures while waiting for me. His new sweatshirt was a great beacon showing me where he was.

Next, we went to the Transportation Museum where we saw relics from the 1898 gold rush, from the 1942 building of the Alaska Highway, and other items like planes, trains and dog sleds. We then went to the Beringia Museum, which taught us what the Beringia location was (the bridge between Alaska and Asia during the Ice Ages) and the animals and people that lived there. The statute of the extinct giant beaver, standing 8’ tall, was creepy. We had a great lunch at The Dirty Northern, with a pub-like atmosphere. After walking around downtown, we drove to the Takhini Hot Springs for a dip.

We picked up the dog, had a mediocre dinner in the Casita (but there were few dishes to clean, so that was good) and finished the night with a movie and a couple of local brewery beers. We picked up some beer a couple days ago from The Yukon Brewery, which has decent beer. The Neds were right – and we’ve quit thinking about the cost of the beer. You wouldn’t believe what we paid for a 12 pack of Coors Light to celebrate Canada Day and the 4th of July. We’ll be in Alaska soon and, hopefully, it’s a little more reasonable.

Today is Clean Day – yuck. The Casita needs a thorough cleaning from top to bottom. It’s amazing how much dirt gets in here.
