Hi.

This is the blog of Michael and Vicki Smith.

Established 2003.

Detour into Skagway, AK (also titled “A Brothel, Oh My”)

The Red Onion Museum tour was very interesting. It served as a brothel for the two years during the Klondike gold rush in 1898. Mike made sure to tip the Madam who gave us a tour, and you can guess where she invited him to put the money. We also found very good beer at the Skagway Brewery. I had the sampler and the blonde was fantastic.

Unfortunately, the rain found us again, so we didn’t do much outdoors. We did walk by the docks and look at the three cruise ships anchored. We saw an adult sea otter and three young ones in the water. ‘Tis the season for young ‘uns. We’ve seen:
– A grizzly bear with two cubs
– A moose with a juvenile
– Lots of young buffalo
– The sea otter with three kids
– A Canuck duck with over 10 chicks
– Swan babies
– Young elk

Even with the definite tourism-focus to the town, both Mike and I noticed it felt good being back in the States. We could tell a difference. Maybe it’s the lack of accent or the better beer or maybe because we can tell the difference between a quarter and a nickel without having to read the coin. We’ve decided to beeline it up to northern Alaska.
