England – Making the Most of Our Day from Sunrise to…well, Early Evening
May 27
Mike’s day off, mostly. Actually, he needed to take architectural pictures for work. He woke up after 4:00am and decided to take some photos. I wanted to see the sunrise over London so we hit the streets about 4:30am. It was so great. There was barely anyone around. We crossed the Tower Bridge, which was lit up and looked beautiful in the morning light. We walked along the southern bank again so Mike could take photographs of the magnificent structures across the water and on that side too. We spent several hours taking pictures in the dawn.
After breakfast, we decided to go to Parliament Square. We caught the Tube to Westminister. I was disappointed to learn the Parliament was closed on Fridays. Shoot! I should have went earlier in the week. The exterior of the Parliament building with Big Ben is fantastic. We decided not to tour Westminister. I had already seen St. Paul’s Cathedral, and Mike wasn’t that interested in seeing it. Instead, we toured Churchill’s War Rooms. Those were fantastic and cramped! Wow, to have worked down there during the Blitz, with the bombs crashing around London, in an underground bunker that would have been crushed if hit by a bomb, living in the bunker with all the smokers, and knowing your country wasn’t winning the war (at least, at first) must have been awful. The museum about Churchill was spectacular, and we spent quite a bit of time reading about him.
We also took a picture of me in front of the Supreme Court of England. Now, I have pictures taken in front of the US and British Supreme Courts. Cheesy, but I like it.
The weather really cooperated for us. It was supposed to rain but didn’t start until after we were back in the hotel. The long days of walking were wearing on us, so we took a nap that afternoon. We lifted together in the hotel’s gym, and went to an uneventful dinner.
